Towards Everest at Sunset – another favourite from the trip so far. Driving up towards Everest made me realise just how small we are, even on this earth…

Day one in Delhi – trains and underground

We arrived in New Delhi at 6am today. It was 35C already. The station is as crowded and I remember, with people sleeping all over the place. Noon temperature is 45C. The new underground train is exceptionally nice. Made by Bombardier, spacious, modern and air-conditioned! 100 metres put of the station, back to same messy little alleys and happily wondering animals, yet full of life everywhere!

Train to New Delhi

We Booked our train tickets to Delhi three weeks ago and only received confirmation about two hours before departure yesterday. As we arrived on the platform, we discovered that our names were indeed on the list that was sticked on the side of the carriage. This is the electronic ticket. However as we settled into our compartment, the fellow passenger told us that he only booked his tickets the same morning! Ah, that’s because he had a friend working in the railway bureau, and he just called him up to buy a ticket. Of course. I guess in big countries with big population, it’s just too easy to corrupt the railway system. The Chinese railway minister was fired and sentenced to prison for corruption last year. But that problem was more serious than dodgy ticket booking..

  1. This ticket of your fellow passenger must have been under
Tatkal scheme (meaning on the spot and this opens nowadays just a day ahead of the departure). His friend’s role must be one of booking the same in the first hour. Well, corruption is another issue. Have a nice time, anyway.

Arrival in India

The India – Nepal border is completely open, free to walk about for all. Locals don’t even need to carry passport. For us foreigners, we looked carefully for where to get our stamps. But if you just walk in, then no one will stop you from ‘illegal entry’ either. After a few minutes walk down the road, we got onto a government bus. The price was fixed! And they gave us actual paper tickets! How orderly!

Departing Nepal

10 hours of bumpy night bus (including two broken tyres, one midnight meal and many stops), half an hour of human rickshaw and a few walks forth and back around the border, we departed from beautiful and friendly Nepal. The bus conductor’s ability to get business along the way is amazing. Although the seats were reserved, he managed to at least triple the registered capacity of the bus, by selling cheap tickets to locals here and there. Then of course all the money goes to his and the driver’s pocket!

Morning market in Kathmandu

Lively is not enough to describe the morning market in Kathmandu. The streets are covered in food, clothing and religious item stalls. The most amazing thing is that two hours later everything disappears and you can hardly recognise the same streets!

Kathmandu Durbar Square

The former palace of the king. Now it’s the happy land of cows, pigeons, pilgrims and shops. Inside one of the temples lives a girl goddess. We were not lucky enough to see her. She is only eight or nine years old. Entrance is free for locals, but 750 Rupees for foreigners! But we managed to get in without paying~
